Antonio Conte has been tipped to quit Tottenham Hotspur in favour of joining Manchester United this summer.
Much of the Italian’s four-month stint at Tottenham has been dominated by speculation of unhappiness.
Earlier this week Conte gave an interview to Italian media and admitted that Spurs had been ‘weakened’ in the January transfer window, after signing two players – Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski – on deadline day.
This came on the back of reports that the former Chelsea and Inter Milan manager was already upset with chairman Daniel Levy over reluctance to spend on their winter targets.
Prior to joining Tottenham, Conte was also linked to the Manchester United position as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer neared the end of his reign at Old Trafford.
And former Crystal Palace defender Damien Delaney ‘genuinely believes’ that the Italian aimed a barb at Levy during that interview and claims that a summer move to the Theatre of Dreams is a possibility.
He told Off The Ball: “I genuinely believe that interview is the first shot across the bows for Daniel Levy, that I will not stand for broken promises and I will not hang around here, especially when there is a job in Manchester becoming available in the summer.
“I think Conte is a great fit for Manchester United, maybe not long term, but they need somebody to arrest the slide and grab that football club, top to bottom, by the scruff of the neck.”
Tottenham are enduring some horrendous form and have lost both of their last two Premier League outings in North London.
However, the narrative surrounding Conte and the Lilywhites could change drastically if they win at Manchester City tomorrow.
A victory like this will make the feeling in and around the club drastically less gloomy and for that reason, Delaney’s prediction should be taken with a pinch of salt because this time tomorrow, leaving Hotspur Way could look a silly idea.
