Ally McCoist has stated that ‘it doesn’t make sense’ that Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy is willing to take the risk where Harry Kane leaves for nothing.
The former striker added that he ‘gave Arsenal stick’ for previously running down the contracts of Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil, who eventually left their respective clubs for free.
The same could happen to Spurs, with their star striker, which could prove to be expensive because he is at the peak of his powers and he is somebody that could fetch £100 million+ if he were to be sold.
There is a big call to be made at Hotspur Way in the summer if Kane doesn’t sign a new contract. Do Tottenham sell the 29-year-old? And that to a rival such as Manchester United?
Or do they wave away any interest and take the risk that he might sign a new contract down the line, knowing that during the summer of 2024, he is a free agent?
Either way, McCoist has previously batted the call that Kane should head to Manchester United, and when he was told about Levy possibly taking the risk of not selling him this summer (Sky Sports), he issued a pretty blunt response, as he told talkSPORT.
On if Spurs would be right to hang on to Kane, even if he leaves for free: “The answer is, no,” said McCoist. “The one thing you say about Daniel Levy is that he is a fantastic, very clever and astute businessman.
“Harry’s in control, in the respect that he can sit for another year. The only thing that would go against that is Harry’s age. I think now is the time, if he is going to move, now is the time.
“The obvious one you would think that he would go to is Manchester United. I know I get that (more money going to Manchester City if Haaland leaves next summer). But Manchester United look like they need an out-and-out centre-forward, don’t they?! So, that would be an obvious one.
“It doesn’t make any business sense (letting him leave for free). I gave Arsenal a lot of stick for how they handled the Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil one, because both of them left for nothing. How can you have a player worth £50, 60 or 70 million and let them go for nothing? It doesn’t make any sense, at all.”
LEVY HASN’T PUSHED THE BOAT OUT FOR KANE
If Levy is indeed being stubborn about Kane’s situation, then it’s pretty pathetic, to be honest.
On so many occasions, the Spurs chairman had the chance to push the boat out under Mauricio Pochettino, and he didn’t, despite the likes of Kane punching well above their weight.
Back then, Levy should have rewarded Kane for his goal-crazy performances by properly backing Pochettino in the market, in the end, he sacked the former PSG boss at the first real sign of trouble.
Tottenham producing another trophyless campaign is a lot down to how the club is being run, not what Kane is doing on the pitch, because he is carrying this club on his shoulders and he needs better quality players around him.
