Richard Keys and Andy Gray have agreed that they find it ‘horrifying’ that the primary job for the next Everton manager is to ‘achieve success in a relegation battle’, as they told their own podcast.

The TV presenter stated that the rumoured task being given out to Rafa Benitez’s replacement shows ‘how far Everton have fallen’.

From Wayne Rooney to Vitor Pereira, it seems as though Frank Lampard will be the man to take the reigns at Goodison Park within the next 24 hours, as reported by the Guardian.

If the former England midfielder is the club’s new manager, then he will walk straight into transfer deadline day and a possible relegation battle with Newcastle.

The Toffees are four points ahead of 18th-placed Newcastle, with a game in hand on Eddie Howe’s side.

But, defeat ahead of their meeting on February 8th, then it will surely drag them into the dogfight.

Either way, this is the reaction of both Keys and Gray to the possible remit the new man in Everton’s dugout has to deal with.

“Is that how far Everton have fallen,” asked Keys. “That the primary job of anyone coming in now is to achieve success in a relegation battle? I find that horrifying.”

Andy Gray responded: “I find it staggering. I find it horrifying. I have said it all along, Everton aren’t going down. That doesn’t even enter my thought process.”

If it is indeed Lampard coming in, then Everton need to appoint him as soon as possible, so he can get down to work.

The obvious Monday transfer deadline day is staring them in the face and Lampard could get a few faces signed up if he’s lucky.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Englishman knocks on Chelsea’s doors and tries to sign a player or players from their jam-packed squad because the Toffees need all the help their need.

The middle of the park is an area of concern, as well as the centre-back spots, so these next 48 hours could be pretty crucial for Everton.
