Former striker Gabby Agbonlahor is backing Newcastle United to beat Liverpool 4-2 on Sunday in a Premier League thriller.

Newcastle welcome Liverpool to St James’ Park and Agbonlahor has predicted a shock win for the home side.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Aston Villa man said: “Newcastle, Liverpool, probably one of the most exciting fixtures, for me, this season. Newcastle, not afraid of anyone, home or away, will go for the jugular. And Liverpool look a bit soft in the middle of the park, getting the ball back, breaking up play.

“I feel this can only end one way, a high-scoring game, like it was back in the day, the good old days of the Premier League. I’m going to go 4-2 to Newcastle.”

Newcastle lost last time out, falling to a 1-0 defeat against Manchester City, so Eddie Howe will be desperate for his team to bounce back and claim all three points.

Newcastle can beat Liverpool

Putting four past Alisson Becker and this Liverpool team may be beyond on them, but Newcastle are definitely capable of winning on Sunday.

Following their takeover, they have assembled a quality squad that has some fantastic players in it.

Alexander Isak, for example, quickly comes to mind. The striker has made a positive start to the season, scoring a brace against Aston Villa in the Magpies’ first game of the new campaign.

What fans can really be pleased about, though, is how much better the depth of the squad now looks. In this transfer window, Newcastle have brought in Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento, giving them cover in the full-back positions.

With the Tyneside club in the Champions League and looking to stay there, bringing in more quality players was absolutely necessary.

Assessing their squad, then, they do have enough to beat Liverpool and compete for the top four again this season. And if Howe’s men do manage to see off their next opponents, it will send a message to not only them, but also the rest of their Champions League qualification rivals.
