Rangers hero Barry Ferguson has commented on the club’s January transfer business.

Rangers hero Barry Ferguson has told BBC Sport that he doesn’t think manager Mark Warburton was backed enough during the January transfer window.

The Gers have endured a difficult ten days, as they were beaten 4-1 away at Hearts before labouring to a 1-1 home draw with Ross County last weekend.

Manager Mark Warburton is now coming in for increasing criticism at Ibrox, with fans unhappy that the club are lying third in the Scottish Premiership, 27 points adrift of league leaders Celtic.

Many fans have been left underwhelmed by Rangers’ transfer activity not only in January, but also last summer, with the club predominantly relying on loans or cheap signings.

Summer signings such as Joe Garner, Philippe Senderos, Matt Crooks and Jordan Rossiter have yet to really impress at Ibrox, whilst Joey Barton and Matt Gilks have already left the club following their summer moves.

In January, manager Warburton was only backed with one permanent signings, as goalkeeper Jak Alnwick arrived from Port Vale to replace the outgoing Gilks, with midfielders Jon Toral and Emerson Hyndman joining on loan from Arsenal and Bournemouth.

Now, former Rangers captain and club hero Barry Ferguson has told BBC Sport that he feels sorry for manager Warburton, as he hasn’t been backed well enough in the transfer market.

Ferguson suggested that loans for two midfielders and a deal for a goalkeeper simply weren’t enough in January, and thinks that Warburton would have wanted to strengthen his squad more last month.

“I do feel sorry for Mark Warburton,” said Ferguson. “I’ve seen a couple of his interviews and I don’t think he’s been backed as much as he’d have wanted. I look at the transfer window, they brought three players in – a goalkeeper and two midfielders. But two are loans.”

“I’m looking at it and thinking, ‘He’s not been backed as he would’ve wanted’. He’d have wanted to strengthen even more,” he added.
