Jamie Carragher has told Monday Night Football, which was broadcast by Sky Sports, that he doesn’t expect Newcastle United to go down, although they could face a huge fight for survival.
Newcastle lost 3-0 to Arsenal last night, as Steve Bruce’s side’s concerning run of form continued.
Newcastle now sit just seven points above the drop zone, with many of the teams around them having games in hand.
But Carragher doesn’t actually expect the Magpies to drop out of the league.
“This group of players shouldn’t go down, but you’d expect them to be where they are – maybe slightly higher if everything is working perfectly,” he said.
“I don’t expect Newcastle to go down but I expect they’ll have the fight of their lives.”
Newcastle have slipped closer and closer to the relegation zone in recent weeks, as their form has taken a turn for the worse.

Newcastle have now lost four of their last five games, and Bruce has been unable to change their fortunes.
The Magpies boss opted to use a more attacking approach last night, but his side were still routinely beaten and failed to create much against an improving Arsenal team.
Newcastle are next in action at the weekend, when they take on Aston Villa.
