Glen Johnson has told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (02/01/21 at 2:40 pm) that he doubts that Liverpool will sign a centre-back this month.
It has been well-documented that Liverpool are in need of another centre-back after long-term injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
French outlet Foot Mercato have reported that Liverpool have eyed a move for Lille star Sven Botman, with a rumoured fee of £27 million mentioned.
Despite Liverpool supporters keen on another centre-back coming in this month, Johnson doesn’t think there will be a fresh face taking to the Anfield turf.
“Everyone wants top centre-havles,” said Johnson. “They’re not easy to find and sometimes you have to work with what you have got.
“Yes, they have got some young kids who have come in but I think they have handled themselves pretty well. It’s obviously a key position for any team, especially for title challengers and champions.
“If they go and buy someone, they are going to have to go and pay top money then the guy coming in knows he is going to be second best in a few weeks time. I don’t think that’s really an option.
“Maybe a short-term loan maybe? Even that I doubt it.”

Fabinho has been outstanding at the back for Liverpool this season, with the naturally defensive-minded midfielder partnering the likes of Joel Matip, Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams at the back.
But Matip is currently out injured and has seen more of the treatment rumour than the Anfield pitch, so it’s understandable if fans are worried about relying on him.
Then you have the two youngsters, who have been very promising, but it’s pretty brave leaning on them as Liverpool aim to defend their crown.
