The Frenchman’s refusal to comment on Szczesny may have been to protect the goalkeeper from the spotlight, or simply a case of him biting him tongue regarding his true feelings.

Curing his inconsistency is key to his development, but with threats to his position from Ospina and Martinez, his position is far from assured if he puts in any more performances like the one at St Mary’s again this season.
