Paul Merson believes that the subdued atmosphere among Arsenal fans on Friday directly reflected the low-energy performance from their team.
Mikel Arteta’s side got their Premier League campaign off to a rotten start with a 2-0 defeat away to Brentford before the weekend.
It wasn’t so much the result that stunned neutral supporters and pundits within English football so much as it was the dismal display by Arsenal on the night.
And Merson, who was in attendance, claimed that the visiting fans only sung one song throughout the 90 minutes.
He said on Sky Sports News: “I mean even the Arsenal fans – and I don’t want to sound disrespectful here – but they were away from home and they sang one song.”
Worrying
These are worrying times for Arteta.
Because of the fallout from this game, there could be a very difficult atmosphere at the Emirates Stadium next week when Arsenal host Chelsea, the European champions.
And with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette also ruled out of that one, it’s hard to see the performance being that much different than it was against the Bees.
