Former Liverpool defender, Jose Enrique, has questioned the club’s decision to sign Cody Gakpo instead of Leandro Trossard.
Trossard, who was previously with Brighton, has joined Arsenal for a cheaper fee than Gakpo and has made an instant impact for the Gunners, putting in two solid performances against two of the best teams in England, Manchester City and Manchester United, this week.
Gakpo, on the other hand, has struggled to make an impact at Liverpool so far. The Dutch winger, who joined from PSV Eindhoven, is yet to score or assist for the Reds and has looked lost at times.
Enrique was baffled by the fact that Liverpool haven’t signed Trossard, stating that the Reds should have signed the Belgian who was available for cheaper than Gakpo.
It is understandable that Enrique would question the decision, as Trossard has started brightly for Arsenal and has quickly established himself as a solid attacking option for the club.
However, it’s important to note that Gakpo is much younger than Trossard and potentially has much more potential. He is still young and has time to adapt to the league and make an impact for Liverpool.
Let’s not forget, Gakpo looked like a star at the World Cup, and if things start to click with him at Liverpool, he will be dangerous.
It’s true that Trossard has started well at Arsenal, but it’s still early days and Gakpo has yet to showcase his full potential at Liverpool. It’s important to give him time and not to rush to conclusions about his performances.
It remains to be seen which deal will prove to be the smarter piece of business, but Enrique has clearly made his mind up that he’d rather have Trossard than Gakpo at Anfield.
