Stevie Nicol doesn’t understand why Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic is a transfer target of Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United.

The Liverpool legend let rip at the American international by suggesting that he ‘hasn’t done anything’ during his time in Chelsea colours, as he told ESPN.

Ever since the West London club paid £58 million for Christian Pulisic in 2019 (Sky Sports), he has struggled to showcase consistency or the luck to stay out of the treatment room.

Therefore, following Chelsea’s miserable bottom-half Premier League finish, it shouldn’t be a surprise to hear that the club are looking to sell players like Pulisic.

But, for the 24-year-old, he is still being linked with clubs high up the table, including Newcastle United, who are back in the Champions League.

Whilst that will be music to the ears of the American, some just can’t understand where all of this ‘confidence’ is coming from.

“I don’t understand where this confidence about Newcastle is coming from,” said Nicol.

“How long has Christian been here? What has he done at Chelsea to make Newcastle, who by the way are in the top four and will be playing in the Champions League?

“Please somebody give me a reason why he is ahead of Almiron, Joelinton or Murphy, or anybody else. All those names you are talking about that he is supposedly ahead of had great seasons.

“Christian, unfortunately, hasn’t done anything for three to four years, so I don’t get where the confidence is coming from. I think he is a talented player, but we haven’t seen that since he went to Chelsea. If he wants to play in the League Cup and the FA Cup, then go to Newcastle because that’s what will happen. But he can stay at Chelsea and do that. If he wants to play, I am sorry, I don’t see it being in the Premier League.”

Almiron proof that it can work for Pulisic

For a number of years, Miguel Almiron struggled at St James’ Park and his big-money transfer was proving to be a waste of money for Newcastle.

But when Howe arrived, he transformed a number of players, including turning Almiron into a goalscoring wide man.

That would be proof to Pulisic that he can go down that very same road and finally showcase the consistent performances he hasn’t been able to deliver for a while now.
