Gary Stevens has said on Twitter that Gareth Bale should not have taken the late free kick for Tottenham Hotspur against Newcastle United.
Bale, on loan from Real Madrid, came on as a substitute in the 88th minute during Tottenham’s Premier League game against Newcastle at St. James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Wales international winger immediately took a free kick from a very good position, but the 31-year-old could not keep his effort on target.
Tottenham drew the match 2-2 and dropped two important points in the process, and after the game, former Spurs defender Stevens said that Bale should not have taken the free kick.
Stevens does make a very good point, and one that some Tottenham fans will agree with.

Bale does take free kicks and scores from them, and one suspects that he would have been confident of getting it in and helping Spurs to all three points at St. James’ Park.
However, it was his first touch, and it is rare for players to score with their very first touch in a game.
