Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer disagreed over whether Leeds United should have been awarded a penalty during their 1-1 draw against Southampton at Elland Road on Saturday, as they stated on Match of the Day.

Match of the Day host, Lineker, felt that Joe Gelhardt was fouled by Ibrahima Diallo as he burst into the penalty area, whilst Shearer ‘didn’t think it was an absolute howler’.

The Leeds players, including Luke Ayling, did protest the call, but at the end of the day, nothing was given and the home side had to walk away with a point.

As Gelhardt got the better of Diallo and ran in front of the Saints flyer, he then proceeded to step in front of the Leeds teenager, who went tumbling to the floor.

Lineker pointed out, if the on-field call was a penalty at first, then they ‘definitely wouldn’t have turned it over’.

“I don’t think it was an absolute howler,” said Shearer.

Lineker interrupted: “You are thinking, it’s one of those, if he had given it, then they definitely wouldn’t have turned it over. It looks a foul and penalty, for me.”

Shearer responded: “I am not sure it’s an absolute howler, for me. I’ll go with it (on-field call).”

Gelhardt came on for half an hour against the Saints and it’s probably about type the versatile Leeds forward starts on a regular basis.

Every time he seems to come off the bench, he brings positive energy to the side and drives at the opposition with such simplicity, yet intelligence.

But Gelhardt hasn’t been showcasing this form, just under Jesse Marsch, but he was doing his talking under Marcelo Bielsa also.

Plus, with Patrick Bamford enduring an injury nightmare, it further points towards him getting shot, especially when Dan James plays that forward role to zero effect or efficiency
