Speaking on the LadBible TV YouTube channel, Jamie Carragher has clashed with Alan Shearer over Kieran Trippier’s role in the England team.
As a Newcastle supporter, Shearer, understandably, thinks that Trippier should be starting for England at the World Cup, be that at left-back or at right-back.
However, Carragher sees things rather differently. The pundit thinks that Trippier isn’t as good as the likes of Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold, while he doesn’t understand the argument that Trippier should be a left-back at all.

Carragher disagrees with Shearer
The Sky pundit spoke to Shearer about his view of Trippier.
“No I don’t see that at all. I see Kieran Trippier as a very good Premier League player. The players we’re talking about him being up against. Kyle Walker, multiple league titles, Trent Alexander-Arnold a Champions League winner, Reece James a Champions League winner,” Carragher said.
“I like Trippier as a player, I don’t understand the left-back thing, I don’t even know where it has come from. I think he’s a solid Premier League player, but I don’t think he should be getting in at full-back.”
In form
Whether or not Trippier is a better player than Walker or Alexander-Arnold is up for debate, but what is unquestionable is that he’s in better form.
Indeed, the Newcastle ace has been on fire this season, both defensively and offensively.
The right-back hasn’t put a single foot wrong while Alexander-Arnold has faltered at Liverpool and Walker has struggled with injuries at Manchester City.
For that reason, it’s easy to make a case for Trippier to start for England at the World Cup, and there’s every chance that Gareth Southgate will see things the same way.
It wouldn’t be a shock at all if Trippier is lining up against Iran in a fortnight’s time.
