Speaking on ESPN, Steve Nicol has picked Trent Alexander-Arnold as the best right-back in the Premier League ahead of Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo and Chelsea’s Reece James.

Right-back has somehow become one of the most glamorous positions in the Premier League as of late, and Alexander-Arnold, Cancelo and James have been leading the charge.

James is Chelsea’s top scorer, Alexander-Arnold is one of the league’s top assisters, while Joao Cancelo played one of the best passes you’re ever likely to see against Everton this weekend.

However, despite James and Cancelo’s brilliance, Nicol was certain that Alexander-Arnold is the best of the bunch.

What’s been said about Alexander-Arnold?

Nicol picked Alexander-Arnold as the top dog when it comes to the three right-backs.

“From a defensive point of view I would say Reece James is ahead of the other two, but I don’t see how you can’t have Trent Alexander-Arnold in first, in terms of overall game, you have to have Trent Alexander-Arnold there, and then Reece James and then Cancelo, but it might be a bit harsh on Cancelo because he’s been fantastic,” Nicol said.

Competition

Whether you agree with Nicol or not, it has to be said that there’s going to be some stiff position at right-back in the Premier League Team of the Year.

Alexander-Arnold, James and Cancelo have all been excellent so far, and it’s no coincidence that these three are all playing for the three teams contending at the top of the table this term.

Full-back is now one of the most important positions on a football pitch and these three are defining the modern role.
