Steven Bergwijn has issued some explosive comments to Dutch media, revealing that it’s very possible he could quit Tottenham Hotspur during the summer transfer window.
The Netherlands international came off the bench in Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Leicester City.
In the reverse fixture at the King Power Stadium, Bergwijn scored two stoppage-time goals as Spurs secured a stunning 3-2 win away to Brendan Rodgers’s side.
That was an example of the player’s game-changing capabilities, but Tottenham boss Antonio Conte isn’t a fan.
Since replacing Nuno Espirito Santo, the Italian manager has started Bergwijn in only one Premier League encounter.
The Athletic reported earlier this year that Bergwijn disliked the Lilywhites’ decision to sack Nuno, who had started him in all three of the North Londoners’ early-season victories in August.
Here’s what the former PSV Eindhoven attacker, a £27 million signing in 2020, said to AD after the Leicester game yesterday.
He said: “A starting spot here? I don’t think so to be honest. It’s a complicated story for me. I don’t play much. Ajax could be an option for me, a return to The Netherlands could be an option for me. The World Cup is coming.”
Leaving makes sense
Reliable Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed three weeks ago that the Dutchman could genuinely quit Tottenham.
And honestly, who could blame him?
As Bergwijn says, the World Cup is coming later this year and there’s no sense in missing an opportunity like that just to stay at a club which clearly does not value you all too much.
Having said that, obviously the Spurs boss has his reasons for not utilising Bergwijn as much as other players, but he needs to think about his own career and really, leaving Hotspur Way makes complete sense.
