Joan Laporta – President of Barcelona – has been speaking anxiously about Barcelona gem Gavi, following strong interest from Liverpool.

What’s the story?

Well, it was said that Liverpool offered the 17-year-old a contract worth £96,000-a-week, with his current terms expiring in June 2023.

Barcelona have been trying to renew Gavi’s contract, although Laporta has now revealed that he’s worried about the situation.

Speaking to L’Esportiu, the 59-year-old said: “Gavi’s agent has the new contract proposal on the table since long time but he has not accepted yet. We don’t understand. I don’t like the situation. I encourage them to accept it as soon as possible, because it also helps us plan.”

Clearly, something is going on between Barcelona and Gavi.

As Laporta states, Barcelona offered the Spain international fresh terms a “long time” ago now, so there must be a problem on the teenager’s side.

Whatever happens, this period of uncertainty is good news for Liverpool.

Now, with the summer transfer window on the horizon, Barcelona face a big decision regarding their No.30 – who Gary Lineker rates very highly.

They can either give up and cash in now, or they can run the risk of losing him for nothing in June 2023, if they haven’t agreed a new contract by then.

In 47 appearances this season, Gavi scored two goals, while also providing six assists for the Spanish giants.

Liverpool should increase Gavi offer

In our view, Liverpool should rock the boat at the Camp Nou even more by increasing their £96,000-a-week offer for Gavi.

At just 17 years of age, the La Masia graduate has already amassed six caps for Spain, bossing Paul Pogba in one eye-catching display against France.

Gavi also has 47 first-team appearances to his name – with this volume of experience under his belt at such a young age, the sky is the limit.

Therefore, Liverpool can definitely afford to bump up their offer a bit more, as we could well be talking about a future Ballon d’Or winner here, after all.

Keep an eye on this saga, as Laporta is certainly starting to sweat.
