Chris Waddle told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport that Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney should play at centre-back for Scotland.
The former England winger thinks Scotland, who face off against Austria in a World Cup qualifier tonight, should play a back four, with Tierney at the heart of the defence.
Scotland’s two best players are Arsenal’s thriving star himself and Liverpool’s very own, Andy Robertson.
That makes Steve Clarke’s life pretty difficult in trying to get his two best players in the team knowing at least one of them will be out of position.
But Waddle thinks Scott McTominay should move back into midfield and Tierney should play at centre-back in a back four for the first time.
“I don’t know why they cannot play a back four,” said Waddle. “Tell Robertson to play left-back and tell Tierney to play centre-half and get McTomiany back in midfield where it’s his best position.
“They have obviously seen something to accommodate their two best players (Tierney and Robertson).
“But a lot of these players, when you join up, if you are used to playing in a four, and all of a sudden you go into a three then it is alien.
“People say you should be able to play. Some can adapt to it and some cannot adapt to it.”

Both Tierney and Robertson are at the top of their games and, during these coming years, life is going to be difficult in trying to find the right balance to fit them in.
Unless, during these coming years, one of them switches to the other flank, or is used in a different position by their club manager, then they will continue to battle for that left-back spot.
And given that Robertson has the proven track record in England behind him, Tierney will have to make serious strides to dethrone his international captain from that spot.
