Speaking on the Ringer FC Podcast, Ian Wright has been discussing Eddie Nketiah and his inability to break into the Arsenal starting XI.
The striker has been on the periphery of the Arsenal XI for years at this point, but for one reason or another, he’s never really been able to cement a place in the side.
Wright believes that Nketiah may have failed to spot his chance to make a name for himself as Arsenal’s striker crisis continues.
What’s Wright said from Nketiah?
The pundit gave his view on the striker.
“Eddie, for me, I haven’t seen enough with Eddie coming off the bench looking hungry enough to challenge two strikers, Auba who wasn’t in form and Laca who isn’t scoring at the rate he was scoring. Eddie has been out on loan, he’s bridged that gap, he knows what it’s like to be away and scoring goals. I don’t know where his head’s at, did he see that opening?” Wright asked.
“Did he see the opening? Did he see that there was an opening at a club of Arsenal’s size to step in and be the guy? Whenever I’ve watched Eddie, whether he’s come off the bench or whether he’s started, it’s just not looked like it,” Wright said.
Not done enough
Wright is correct in saying that Nketiah hasn’t done enough. However, it’s also not been as easy as the pundit makes out.
Wright says that Nketiah knows what it’s like to go on loan and that he’s bridged that gap, but has he really?
Let’s not forget, his loan spell to Leeds was cut short because he wasn’t being picked in the Whites’ team ahead of Patrick Bamford, so he’s not really had that long-term first-team experience before.
Sadly, it seems as though Nketiah’s chance has come and gone at Arsenal.
