Patrick Bamford has revealed how Mike Dean justified a yellow card for Leeds United team-mate Kalvin Phillips a little earlier this week.
The United midfielder was booked for a foul on West Ham United’s Pablo Fornals during a 2-0 defeat for Marcelo Bielsa’s side in East London.
It looked to be a contentious decision and one talkSPORT host labelled it a ‘massive dive’ by the Hammers playmaker.
And Bamford, a £10 million signing by Leeds back in 2018, has revealed that the famed referee – who also chalked off two goals for the visitors – indicated that the height of Phillips’ foot was a factor in the decision.
He told the Leeds United podcast: “The referee said that he ‘went in aggressively with his foot high’. There were a couple of them in midfield, Coops had one against him, so I don’t know what’s going on.”
This was the Whites’ fourth defeat in five Premier League games and Bielsa’s troops need to get their season back on track.
Problem is, it gets no easier for Leeds because next on the agenda is a visit of in-form Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.
And there’s a bit of a gap opening up between the top and bottom half of the table now, but Leeds, who are 11th and five points behind ninth-placed Aston Villa, are well capable of putting a good run of form together – even starting against the Blues.
