Alan Shearer made headlines this week for comments about Tottenham Hotspur hitman Harry Kane [Football London].
The Newcastle United icon claimed that Kane would be just as deadly as Erling Haaland in the Premier League had he joined Manchester City.
Haaland is ripping up European and English football this season, netting 20 goals across all competitions already.
Prior to signing Haaland, Kane was heavily linked with a transfer from Tottenham to Pep Guardiola’s side during the summer of 2021.
And when asked if Shearer’s comments had any merit, Pep said via The MEN: “I don’t know. I don’t have the ability to know what would happen if Harry Kane was here. Alan was a striker maybe he knows better than me.”
You can see Shearer’s rationale but really, Haaland might simply be a once-in-a-lifetime goalscorer and as lethal as Kane is, the Norway international may be better.
That’s because even before joining City, one of Europe’s best teams, he was still probably the best number nine in world football.
The former Borussia Dortmund marksman was playing Europa League football last season, so he is proven to be world class at a vastly-inferior team.
We’ll never know if Kane – who earns £200,000 per week – would be just as good Haaland under Guardiola.
And really, who cares?
Tottenham got what they wanted in the form of Kane staying in North London and obviously you won’t find anybody at the Etihad crying that they had to settle for Haaland over the England international.
