Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij has been quoted by Calcio Mercato as saying that he doesn’t know whether he will sign a new contract with the club.
De Vrij, 25, has been one of Serie A’s top defenders since joining Lazio from Feyenoord in the summer of 2014, though his spell in Rome hasn’t always been smooth.
The Dutch international missed most of last season through injury, but he is back to featuring regularly in what is an important season for the centre back.
De Vrij is out of contract at the end of the season, and with no World Cup with the Netherlands to distract him, the defender may be placing strong focus on deciding his future.
Now, De Vrij has been quoted by Calcio Mercato as saying that he doesn’t know whether he will sign a new contract, suggesting he may be primed for a 2018 move.
I always want to improve and do better, which is my goal for 2018. Renewal? I don’t know,” said De Vrij.
Reports from the Liverpool Echo over the weekend suggested that Everton are looking to sign De Vrij in 2018, either in a cut-price deal in January or as a free agent at the end of the season, with director of football Steve Walsh understood to be a huge fan.
Despite splashing the cash on Michael Keane over the summer, Everton still need another centre back, and De Vrij fits the bill.
The comments over his future may just give Everton some hope of securing his signature, but with a host of clubs keen, the Toffees may have to move quickly in 2018.
