The Tottenham Hotspur centre-back was far from his best against Arsenal yesterday.

Alan Shearer was highly critical of Jan Verotnghen’s display for Tottenham against Arsenal yesterday, whilst also lamenting Juan Foyth’s performance, when speaking exclusively to the Sun.
Spurs were second best against the Gunners for most of the game, and their centre-back pairing of Vertonghen and Foyth looked vulnerable all match against Arsenal’s aggressive front line.
Vertonghen, 31, is usually one of Mauricio Pochettino’s most dependable players, but he was incredibly poor yesterday, giving away a penalty in the first-half, before getting sent-off late on in the game.
Shearer was highly critical of the Belgian, when speaking exclusively to the Sun, stating that he doesn’t have a clue what the centre-back was thinking by handling in the area:

“The two players he decided to play at centre-half, Jan Vertonghen and Juan Foyth, were very poor. This was the first time they have started a game together – and it showed. I really don’t have a clue what Vertonghen was thinking with the handball which led to Arsenal’s penalty, and Foyth also made an error which led to a goal.”
Pochettino will surely have to consider bringing Toby Alderweireld back to the starting line-up for Wednesday’s crucial Premier League clash with Southampton.
Whether he will drop the experienced Vertonghen to the substitutes bench, however, remains to be seen.
