Chris Coleman told Sky Sports on Wednesday evening that Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins made the ‘right choice’ turning down Tottenham.

Speaking to Sky Sports Super 6 Podcast, Watkins shared that Tottenham were interested in his services before he made his £33 million switch to Villa Park last summer.

But with Harry Kane at the helm, and Watkins having to play second fiddle to the England captain, he opted against moving to North London.

And former Wales boss Coleman thinks he was ‘better than’ warming the bench for Spurs.

“He has been a good signing for Aston Villa in his first season in the Premier League,” said Coleman.

“I don’t blame Ollie Watkins (for picking Villa). He was going to be a backup. He was fantastic at Brentford for two or three years. He was scoring goals for fun.

“And he doesn’t want to be coming to the Premier League as a back-up. He is certainly better than that.

“I think he made the right choice to go to Villa knowing that he’s going to play every week.”

Well, Watkins is playing alongside Kane now, but for England, which just goes to show his remarkable rise and how he made the right choice.

With 14 Premier League goals to his name, including scoring against Spurs on Wednesday, plus five assists, he has been one of the standout performers and signings of the season.

He will be hoping it results in him earning that England call for the delayed Euros this summer because he was part of Gareth Southgate’s recent plans.
