Ale Moreno says he disagrees with Lionel Messi that Tottenham Hotspur and Argentina star Cristian Romero is the best defender in the world.
One of football’s biggest superstars bigged up his fellow countryman by claiming that he is the number one defender – he was Man of the Match as Argentina beat Ecuador 1-0 on Friday for their opening World Cup qualifier.
Cristian Romero has recently come off helping Argentina win the 2022 World Cup, so it’s understandable that his stock is pretty high, in that regard.
But, on the domestic stage, he was as culpable as anyone at Tottenham producing defensive disasterlcass after disasterclass last season, that’s probably why Moreno disagreed with Lionel Messi, as he told ESPN.
But, at the end of the day, when one of the world’s best, if not, perhaps the greatest of all time speaks, then who are we to disagree?
Either way, Moreno was asked about Messi’s comments and he issued the following response.

Reaction to Messi’s praise for Romero
“No, is the answer to that,” said Moreno. “No, I don’t agree with Lionel Messi. I assume so (Messi gassing up his own player). That’s diesel gas right there.”

Romero and Micky van de Ven partnership
Romero was a top signing when he first joined under Nuno Espirito Santo and he is still a top player now.
It’s just a case of the player needing stability beside him because, as soon as he joined, to no fault of his own, Tottenham’s defence was on the decline.
From key players like Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen leaving, change of managers, Eric Dier going backwards, Japhet Tanganga not progressing, Davinson Sanchez getting worse and the new signings just not settling in.
All of this didn’t help Romero’s cause because he has been and still is a bright spark at the back for the club.
