Speaking on the Die for Three Points Podcast, Steve Bruce has been discussing his departure from Newcastle United.
As we all know, in October 2021, Newcastle became the richest club in world football after a takeover from the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, and new owners meant big changes at St James’ Park.
The first change the club had to make was in the dugout, Steve Bruce’s final few months at the club were a disaster, and the new owners had to let him go.
Interestingly, on his way out, the owners asked Bruce who he thought should have been the new manager, and Bruce actually recommended Eddie Howe for the job.

Bruce recommended Howe
The ex-Magpies boss spoke about his final conversations with the owners.
“I’m delighted that Newcastle are doing well now, but it didn’t matter what I did up there or what I tried to do. It just wasn’t going to be. Over the last 12 months, a change of ownership and a change of direction. The new owners were terrific with me I have to say, I said to them ‘look I think my time is up here, the only negative thing left is myself’,” Bruce said.
“Would you believe that they did ask me my opinion of who could take over and I did recommend Eddie Howe to them. I thought he’s a very good young manager, and I’m pleased to say he got the job and I am delighted they’re doing so well.”
Parting gift
Steve Bruce didn’t do much good at Newcastle United, but telling PIF to hire Eddie Howe was his perfect parting gift.
Howe has been nothing short of a revolutionary on Tyneside this season, and he may actually have Bruce to thank for being in this position.
Of course, PIF may well have hired Howe without this recommendation, but a glowing review from the outgoing manager certainly won’t have harmed his chances of getting the job.
