Speaking on the Robbie Fowler Podcast, Jamie Carragher has claimed that he couldn’t lace Virgil van Dijk’s boots as a footballer, but he claims he’d still try to boss him around if they played together.

The Sky Sports pundit will go down in history as one of the Reds’ finest ever centre-halves, but he clearly believes that van Dijk is quite simply a level above where he was.

“Yeah definitely, Rob, that’s my personality. That’s just me as a person, so the way I speak on the football pitch is the way I speak now in the television studio. The way I spoke when I first played football. I know I am a big character and a big personality. It’s not an act, that’s just me,” Carragher said when asked about his vocal style on the pitch.

“Whatever team I went into I would be the dominant player with my voice. Whatever team I played in I always told people what to do. So if I played with Virgil van Dijk now, I couldn’t lace his boots as a footballer, but I would still be telling him where to go on a football pitch, because that’s me.”

The idea of Carragher and van Dijk playing in the same backline is mouth-watering.

Carragher barking orders and being the leader, while van Dijk’s pure talent would shine next to a player like Carragher.

It’s hard to argue with the ex-Reds player’s view that he couldn’t lace van Dijk’s boots. After all, this is a defender who finished second on the Ballon d’Or voting not so long ago.
