Ian Wright says he ‘couldn’t believe’ Arsenal were able to sign Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid following their 3-1 win over Chelsea on Tuesday night at the Emirates.

The Arsenal captain netted a brace against helpless Chelsea, who remain 12th in the Premier League table, whilst Mikel Arteta’s side returned to the top of the tree.

Martin Odegaard initially joined Arsenal on a six-month loan deal from Real Madrid during the January transfer window of 2021, before penning a long-term contract on a £34 million deal (Sky Sports) the following summer.

In his first full season, the 24-year-old scored seven goals and supplied four assists – but he has already slapped his best season tally out of the door.

With the captain’s armband wrapped around him, he now has 14 goals and eight assists from his 33 Premier League games, including a brace against Chelsea.

Ian Wright is loving what the quick-thinking midfielder is producing and he was sure to give Odegaard his flowers, as he told Premier League Productions (02/05/23 at 10:10 pm).

“I couldn’t believe we got him on loan from Real Madrid in the first place and then when he came back,” said Wright.

“His pedigree, what he is capable of and his ability. The fact that he is captain now – leading by example and chipping in with that many goals. He has been unbelievable.

“I think he has been our player of the season, if I am totally honest. William Saliba was on that track. But he has been injured.

“Odegaard’s consistency for Arsenal this season has been absolutely tremendous for us.”

ODEGAARD IS BACK TO HIS BEST

The Norway star will admit himself, during these past few weeks, alongside a number of first-team stars, his and their performances have been off-colour.

It’s a big reason why they dropped points in their last four matches.

But he was back to his best last night, albeit it’s against a Chelsea side that would have probably gone down if they had six or so fewer points than they already have because they aren’t winning a game for love, or money after now losing six on the bounce.
