Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Jamie Carragher has named Trent Alexander-Arnold as the one modern-day Premier League player he’d love to play alongside.

Carragher, as a Liverpool legend, says he would love to work with Alexander-Arnold, not only because he’s an amazing player, but also because he thinks he could help him improve defensively.

The pundit says that Alexander-Arnold isn’t always switched on at the back, and Carragher believes that his leadership at the back would help him improve in that area.

What’s been said?

Carragher responded when asked which current player he’d most like to play alongside.

“I’m thinking about myself at centre-back and who I could affect, and I’m going to say Trent. To play with someone like that who is so unique, but with the type of player I was, I was big in terms of organising the team. I think I could help Trent at times, there was a chance tonight at the back post where before it happened I was thinking ‘Trent, get back, get back.’ And if I was there, he’s an amazing player anyway, I just think I could help him switch on at times where he’s not switched on enough defensively,” Carragher said.

Does he need help?

Carragher says that he could help Trent Alexander-Arnold be more switched on defensively, but we have to question whether or not he needs that help.

Yes, he’s got holes in his game at the back, but in terms of being organised and being in the right place at the right time, Alexander-Arnold knows exactly what he’s doing.

He’s not always marking his man, but as the most creative player on the Liverpool team, he’s not really supposed to be.

On paper, Alexander-Arnold is a right-back, but by no means is he what you would call a traditional defender.

Carragher says that he could help Alexander-Arnold defensively, but perhaps that would stifle some of his creativity.
