Dejan Lovren has claimed that he could’ve easily stepped in to solve Liverpool’s defensive crisis this season.

The Reds sold Lovren to Zenit last summer for £11 million but then failed to replace him.

He was by no means Liverpool’s best central defender and the player admitted that a lack of game time was a reason behind his exit, but it’s clear that he would’ve got a lot of football this season.

Jurgen Klopp has been without Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez – his best two centre-backs – since Octboer and Joel Matip’s latest injury is one that’ll also keep him out for the rest of the season.

Considering Klopp has been playing midfielders Fabinho and Jordan Henderson in defence, this is a serious situation for Liverpool, although they signed Ozak Kabak and Ben Davies on deadline day.

Here’s what Lovren told talkSPORT about the crisis.

He said: “Yes of course I could do the job but like I said do I have regrets? No. I was there for six years and for four-and-a-half years I had a really good time but for the last year-and-a-half it was not a good time.”

Michael Edwards, Liverpool’s transfer guru, had a great summer.

He orchestrated deals for Thiago and Diogo Jota – the latter of whom has been injured for two months – but it is clear that failing to sign a Lovren replacement was a mistake.

This is a freak season in terms of injuries but still, him and Klopp should’ve planned for the worst case scenario and it has cost Liverpool, who are 10 points behind Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.
