Crystal Palace may be about to miss out on Patrick Vieira with the Arsenal legend in contention to take over at Serie A outfit Sampdoria, his agent told Il Secolo XIX.

With both Palace and Everton on the lookout for a new head coach, the futures of two Premier League-winning heroes appear to be inextricably entwined.

Calciomercato reported last week that the Toffees were giving serious consideration to the idea of replacing a 60-something Italian with, well, another 60-something Italian.

Claudio Ranieri, seven years Carlo Ancelotti’s senior, is set to walk away from Sampdoria following a respectable ninth-place finish.

And Everton have emerged as a surprise destination for a man who famously led Leicester City to one of the greatest sporting achievements of our time.

But could Ranieri’s place in the Sampdoria dugout be taken by another former Premier League champion?

“There is a meeting, I can confirm,” said Vieira’s agent Federico Pastorello when asked about Sampdoria’s interest in a man who has been out of work since being sacked by Nice in December.

The Athletic reported a month ago that Vieira was also in contention to replace Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace.

The trail has grown cold since then, however, with the Eagles appearing to put all their eggs into the Nuno Espirito Santo basket.
