Jamie Carragher has suggested that Liverpool’s Premier League match against Leeds United next week is now bigger than the League Cup final against Chelsea after Manchester City’s loss to Tottenham.

Speaking on Saturday Night Football on Sky Sports after Antonio Conte’s incredible result over the Premier League leaders, the former Liverpool defender made the point that the Reds’ game in-hand in the division against Leeds is much more important than their upcoming Wembley final.

Liverpool host Leeds next Wednesday at Anfield where three points will take the Merseyside club to just three points behind City in the Premier League standings, putting the title race back on the cards after it looked all wrapped up from Pep Guardiola’s side.

And for Carragher, the pundit made the revelation that Liverpool’s clash against Leeds next week is bigger than the Reds’ League Cup final against Chelsea the following Sunday.

Carragher said: “I certainly think for the next four or five days, the Leeds game at Anfield for Liverpool is more important than the cup final on the Sunday against Chelsea. There was a little bit of hope that Liverpool could do something, a glimmer of hope, when City dropped points at Southampton.

“It was the first time in such a long time that they hadn’t won and you very rarely see a Pep Guardiola team get pegged back. So, I’d still say they are very much in the hotseat. Even a team of Liverpool’s quality coming here to win will not be easy. But the great thing not just for Liverpool supporters but for the country is that it looks like we could have a title race on.”

Leeds game is massive, but League Cup should be bigger for Liverpool

The Premier League title race could be back on if Liverpool secure three points against Leeds on Wednesday, yet to say that match is bigger than the Reds’ second-ever Wembley cup final appearance under Klopp is a foolish comment from Carragher.

Whilst Liverpool have become giants under the German, they are still a club who have won fewer trophies than the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United over the past few years, and their League Cup final against Chelsea should be bigger than their fixture against Leeds despite the ramifications of last night’s result at the Etihad Stadium.
