Luciano Spalletti has admitted that he ‘can’t wait’ for a return to management in what looks like a potential boost for Newcastle United’s managerial search, while speaking to Sky Sport Italia.
While Mauricio Pochettino appears to be target numero uno for a Magpies side hoping to have their long-awaited takeover ratified sooner rather than later, it is fair to say there are no shortage of contingency plans if the Argentine tactician rejects a stunning £19 million-a-year contract at St James’ Park (Sky).
Max Allegri, Lucien Favre, Andre Villas-Boas and former boss Rafa Benitez have all been linked with Steve Bruce’s job in recent weeks.
Spalletti too is in the frame. Calciomercato claims that the experienced Italian who has been out of work since departing Inter Milan a year ago could be offered a return to the dugout with one of England’s best supported clubs.
With Spalletti chomping at the bit, the chance to prove himself in England might be impossible for the 61-year-old to turn down.
“I like training, I can’t wait to go back,” said a man who led Roma to Coppa Italia glory in 2007 and 2008, their most recent taste of silverware.
“There is no need for a project or the ability to spend £200 million in the transfer market.”
Fortunately for Spalletti, however, Newcastle would offer him a project and £200 million to spend if Mike Ashley finally hands over the reigns to Saudi Arabian billionaire Mohammed Bin Salman.
If the veteran Italian does head to England this summer, he will be looking to replicate the success of his compatriot Roberto Mancini, who famously transformed Manchester City from a deep-pocketed outsider into a Premier League force.
