Paul Merson has written in SportsKeeda that he cannot understand how Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal could sign Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid for a relatively low transfer fee.

The former Arsenal star has said that he has been been impressed by how Odegaard has performed for the Gunners.

The Sky Sports pundit has added that Arsenal made a bargain signing in the Norway international attacking midfielder.

Odegaard had a loan spell at Arsenal from Madrid in the second half of the 2020-21 campaign.

The Gunners signed the playmaker on a permanent contract in the summer of 2021.

As reported by Sky Sports, Arsenal paid Madrid an initial £30 million for Odegaard, plus bonuses worth around £4 million.

Paul Merson on Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard

Merson wrote in SportsKeeda: “Martin Odegaard is someone who has impressed me at the start of the season.

“He’s a very good footballer and has got a proper footballing brain – I can’t understand how Real Madrid let a player of his caliber go for as little as €30 million!

“He’s led by example so far and looks set to be a key player for the Gunners this season.”

Big player for the Gunners

In our view, Martin Odegaard is one of the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League and is a key figure for Arsenal.

The playmaker has been superb for the Gunners so far this season and is leading by example on the pitch.

Odegaard was made the Arsenal captain at the start of the season by manager Arteta, and he is showing why.

The attacking midfielder has scored three goals in four Premier League appearances so far this season.

Odegaard scored seven goals and provided four assists in 32 league starts for Arsenal last season.
