Speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast, Ian Wright has hit out at Edu for his comments about Willian needing time to settle in at Arsenal.

We argued on Tuesday that Edu’s view on Willian was contradictory after his comments on the Brazilian at the start of the season, and it seems as though Wright has a very similar opinion.

“Can I say something right, because there’s something that I’ve read with Edu, and I was with Edu for the game last week against Rapid Vienna,” Wright said.

“We had a chat and yes he’s very energised and everything, but I was very disappointed with something I read with Edu saying about Willian and needing time, and I can’t have that.

“I’d say it to him if I saw him, we don’t really want to be peddling that, we brought Willian in to hit the ground running, and when he came in I read what you said about a player that we need immediate impact from.

“Now, we’ve signed Willian for three years, which was very dubious to a lot of people and even I went ‘ok’, but I know that Willian is a serial winner and the experience that he brings and we have young players who can learn from him.

“To hear we need to give him time, I needed something to squeeze.”

The pundit went on to explain that he’s not trying to criticise Willian himself, but he’s not happy with what Edu has said.

“I’m not trying to throw him under the bus, what I’m trying to do hear is explain that Edu can’t come out and say these things, when Arsenal are in a position where we’ve signed a player for three years who we need to hit the ground running.”

Wright isn’t wrong with this view.

For Edu to claim that Willian was going to hit the ground running, only to then do a U-turn a few months later is ridiculous.

Of course, Edu isn’t going to hold his hands up and admit that his new signing is struggling, but you can see right through these comments.

Willian couldn’t have asked for an easier transition to Arsenal either, he’s not moved city and he’s not moved league, so why would joining Arsenal be a culture shock?

It’s great to see Wright holding the higher-ups at the Emirates to account as Edu is quite clearly just stringing the fanbase along with these comments.
