Michael Owen has admitted that he ‘can’t believe’ how well Aaron Ramsdale has done at Arsenal after suffering two relegations with Sheffield United and Bournemouth.

In 2021, with Bernd Leno, a popular number one at Arsenal, the club paid Sheffield United £30 million for Aaron Ramsdale’s services (Sky Sports).

At the time, not only did many question the transfer fee, but why Mikel Arteta was pushing for a player like Ramsdale given that they had Leno in between the sticks.

At the time, the 24-year-old wasn’t even an England international and started life on the bench when he first moved to north London.

But, fast forward to the present, and he is now an England regular and pushing Arsenal towards the Premier League title.

It has been an unexpected rise from Ramsdale, according to Michael Owen, who was full of praise for the ‘brave’ goalkeeper, as he told Premier League Productions (16/04/23 at 1:15 pm).

“Did you expect him to be this good?” asked Owen. “I raised my eyebrows. When he first signed, I thought ‘how much?!’ I can’t believe how well he has done.

“I think one attribute that he has got is bravery. He’s quick, yes – I just see him as running out and ball in the face, absolutely no problem. He has got all those attributes. But he looks like a brave goalkeeper willing to keep the ball out.”

RAMSDALE PUSHING TO BE ENGLAND’S NUMBER ONE

For a while now, Everton’s Jordan Pickford has held that role, and in truth, he has never let his country down, in that regard.

Whilst Ramsdale could finish the season as a Premier League title-winner and one of the keepers of the season.

Come Euro 2024, Gareth Southgate might just stick with Pickford as his main guy, although, Ramsdale, alongside Newcastle United’s Nick Pope, are pushing hard.
