Jamie Carragher told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports during their live coverage of Arsenal’s win against Newcastle that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was ‘quite fortunate’ with his first goal.
Aubameyang opened the scoring five minutes into the second-half and Carragher suggested that the previously struggling Arsenal striker hit his shot in hope and Karl Darlow in between the sticks should have done better.
In truth, Arsenal fans won’t care how their £56 million man [BBC Sport] put the ball into the back of the net because it then gave him the confidence to score his second not long after.
During Carragher’s post-game analysis of Arsenal’s 3-0 win, this is what Carragher had to say about Aubameyang’s opening strike.
“That bit of quality [from Partey], they have played out,” said Carragher. “This happened two or three times in the first half [to Newcastle] getting caught on the counter-attack.
“And Aubameyang just delivers. It’s not great from the goalkeeper. He [Darlow] thinks it’s going to go [to his near post]. Just as he [Aubameyang] is connecting, you see the goalkeeper’s stance, he is already on his left leg. Ready to go there where he thinks he’s going to shoot.
“I think Aubameyang has just hit that. He’s probably quite fortunate. I cannot say it’s not a great finish. It’s not right in the corner. It’s almost gone down the throat of the goalkeeper.”

Along with Arsenal’s thriving youngsters if Aubameyang can get back to his goalscoring best then Mikel Arteta’s side will only head one way.
They will be hoping for a European finish at the end of the campaign but they have to continue their current form and hope those above them provide them with a helping hand.
There are at least 10 teams fighting for those European places, so Arsenal have a tough fight on their hands.
