Graeme Souness has claimed in The Times that Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy would have expected more from Gareth Bale when he signed him from Real Madrid.

Bale returned to Tottenham on loan from Spanish and European giants Madrid in the summer of 2020.

The winger was carrying an injury when he arrived at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and it has taken the winger a fair few months to get into decent form.

The Wales international scored twice against Crystal Palace in the Premier League last weekend and almost found the back of the net in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

Bale could start for Tottenham in the North London derby against Arsenal today, and, ahead of the game, Liverpool legend Souness, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, has given his take on the future of the 31-year-old.

Souness wrote in The Times: “I cannot believe that when Levy signed off on the Bale loan move, he thought that post-Christmas the Welshman would not be starting and at it for the full 90.

“If and when the Tottenham chairman considers a new deal to keep him then all the instincts in his business brain will tell him that it should be on pay-as-you-play terms.

“I cannot see the player or his agents being happy with that, which would take Bale and Tottenham back to square one and make the task of keeping Kane even harder.”

Uncertain future

It is hard to predict what will happen regarding Bale’s future at Tottenham. There are a lot of factors at play.

Madrid may not sell him at the end of the season, and if they do, then they could ask for a decent transfer fee.

If Spurs do not end up in the Champions League next season, then the North London club may not be able to keep Bale even on loan, let alone make the move permanent.

For now, Spurs and Bale should concentrate on finishing in the Premier League top four and winning the Europa League this season.
