What a horrendous afternoon for Everton.
Rafael Benitez is currently under massive pressure following a 2-1 defeat away to Norwich City today.
It’s a defeat so much worse by the fact that the Canaries were rock bottom of the Premier League standings prior to Everton visiting.
The Toffees were trailing 2-0 at the break after a Michael Keane own goal and another from Adam Idah.
Tensions were so volatile among the travelling Everton supporters that one of them stormed the field and seemed to be heading toward Benitez, but stewards intervened.
Jordan Pickford, the goalkeper, could and probably should’ve done better for the goal which ultimately cost the Goodison Park outfit, who halved the deficit through Richarlison in the second half.
And here’s what Martin Keown said about the goal:
He told BBC’s Football Focus: “Pickford will feel he maybe should have done better. I cannot believe he has been allowed to squeeze that in, it was a really good finish.”
Pickford, a £30 million signing by Everton, is a fantastic goalkeeper but he’s been occasionally struggling this season.
As he proved during Euro 2020, he really is outstanding on his day but, like so many Toffees under Benitez, he hasn’t been able to produce his finest performances.
Consequence of this defeat, Benitez’s outfit remain 15th in the Premier League standings.
And with this being their worst result of the campaign by a distance, there’ll be renewed calls on the club to sack the former Liverpool manager.
They have a semi-difficult run of fixtures on the horizon – Aston Villa, Newcastle, Leeds – but if they lose to City, the worst team in the division, well it doesn’t look good for Benitez.
