Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Nuno Espirito Santo has ruled Eric Dier out of Tottenham’s Europa League clash with Rennes, alongside Son Heung-Min and Ryan Sessegnon.

Sessegnon and Son missed Tottenham’s game against Crystal Palace at the weekend, and were widely expected not to play here, but this is the first indication we’ve had of how serious Dier’s injury is.

The England international limped off on Saturday, and it was reportedly a bad dead leg, but that has seemingly been enough to rule him out of this game, with Nuno stating that he, Sessegnon and Son haven’t travelled.

What’s been said?

Nuno gave a fitness update.

“I can tell you who didn’t travel. Sonny, Dier, Sessegnon so that’s it,” The manager said.

Inevitably, Nuno was asked about the trio’s availability against Chelsea, to which he replied:

“We don’t know at the moment. We’ll have to assess them.”

Time to rotate

Luckily, Dier and Son are only missing a Europa Conference League game here, so it’s not the end of the world for Spurs.

The Conference League will likely provide the London club with a chance to rotate throughout this season, and while these are enforced changes, these are switches that Nuno would probably have made in any case.

Of course, Spurs fans will be hoping that Dier and Son are back fit for the weekend, especially given how poor they looked against Crystal Palace once Dier went off injured.

Fingers crossed Dier is back in the heart of the defence against the Blues, because if he’s not, Chelsea could have a field day.
