Gabby Agbonlahor thinks West Ham United forward Michail Antonio could just secure a surprise transfer to relegation rivals Wolves in January.
The former Aston Villa striker pointed out that Antonio ‘rarely starts’ for David Moyes at West Ham now and he will become the ‘main man’ at Wolves.
Even though only one point separates 17th-placed West Ham and 19th-placed Wolves in the Premier League table, those in the Midlands are keen to bolster their lifeless attack.
They have already added Matheus Cunha to their ranks this month and they aren’t looking to stop there, with suggestions that Julen Lopetegui is a big fan of Antonio.
In East London, Moyes has summer signing Gianluca Scamacca as his main guy now, with Antonio as the number two and the likes of Jarrod Bowen proving the goal threat out wide.
West Ham’s issue is that the goals have dried up for those players, so it has to be questioned why the Hammers would sanction such a deal, but Agbonlahor backed it, as he told talkSPORT (11/01/23).
“The only reason I can see it happening is that he’s gone from main man at West Ham to now he rarely starts,” said Agbonlahor.
“He might think to himself ‘I am going to be the main man at Wolves, why not?!’. He’s at that age now, isn’t he?! What is he, 31, Antonio? So, it’s the right time for him to try and move.”
WEST HAM CAN’T LET ANTONIO LEAVE
Unless a stupid fee is put on the table for the player, and ‘stupid fee’ has to be defined by someone, then West Ham can’t allow Antonio to leave for a relegation rival.
That’s the state the Hammers are in, if they were higher up the table, and they may well climb during these coming months, then perhaps parting ways with Antonio wouldn’t have been a bad idea.
But at 32, yes Antonio is at the back end of his career, but he can still be trusted to try and drag the team out of the mess they find themselves in, rather than providing Wolves with a helping hand.
