Reported Arsenal and Newcastle United target Wout Weghorst has admitted that he is free to discuss a move away from Wolfsburg is ‘something exciting’ comes up this summer, speaking to BILD.

It is no coincidence that, since the giant striker swapped Holland for Germany in 2018, the Wolves have been transformed from a wounded animal into a snarling beast of the Bundesliga.

VFL needed a relegation play-off to avoid dropping into the second division just two years ago.

But, thanks to the inspirational displays of their 16-goal top scorer, Oliver Glasner’s team will be playing Europa League football in 2020/21 after an impressive seventh place finish.

Though, with interest from abroad, it seems increasingly unlikely that Weghorst will stick around for a third season.

BILD reported last week that Arsenal and Newcastle are interested in a 6ft 6ins Dutch international who has scored at least 15 goals in each of the last five years for Heracles, AZ Alkmaar and now Wolfsburg.

And Weghorst’s comments this week suggest that another move could be on the cards sooner rather than later.

“We discussed that we should sit down if something exciting came up for me,” the Dutch international says.

“Nobody has to be afraid. It would be good for a club to get a lot of money again after investing in a player. I have ambitions and I want to reach the highest level.

“In the past two years I have been able to show that I can deliver at this level and that there is more to come for me.”

Like it or not, Die Wolfe have undoubtedly become something of a stepping stone club in recent years with Ivan Perisic, Kevin De Bruyne and Julian Draxler moving on to bigger things after shining in that iconic green shirt.

Speaking to BILD on Monday, former Arsenal and Wolfsburg coach Andreas Jonker has encouraged Weghorst to choose the Emirates over a potential move to Newcastle.
