Speaking on the Talking Transfers Podcast, Graeme Bailey has been discussing Matheus Nunes ahead of his move to Wolves.

According to Bailey, the Portuguese midfielder is on his way to Molineux, but Wolves weren’t the only team looking at Nunes this summer.

Indeed, Bailey says that the midfielder was in fact on Liverpool’s radar, but due to the fact the Reds don’t like to spend big towards the end of a transfer window, a move to Anfield is off the cards.

What’s been said?

Bailey shared what he knows about Nunes.

“At this point Nunes is coming in. It’s an interesting way in which it has panned out. They tried back in June and the player wasn’t keen, he had Liverpool and City who had a good look at him. He turned down West Ham, and he’s a very good player this boy. He’s a real top-drawer player, and it’s a club-record deal at £42m,” Bailey said.

“To get a player of Nunes’ quality, I can confirm that he was definitely on Liverpool’s radar, but whether they wanted to spend this sort of money, we know that they don’t tend to do that sort of thing at the end of a window.”

Might regret it

We can understand that Liverpool don’t like to spend big towards the end of a transfer window – after all, pre-season is key for any new player bedding in at Anfield.

However, we can’t help but feel that Liverpool may regret not going for Nunes here.

The Portuguese ace is an absolute superstar in the making, and after Luis Diaz took to the Premier League like a duck to water, Nunes could’ve been another readymade Portuguese League export.

Thiago and Jordan Henderson aren’t getting any younger and we can’t help but feel that the Reds could have done with Nunes in their midfield.
