There’s been a lot of speculation about James Maddison joining Newcastle United in recent weeks, with the attacker also wanted by Tottenham Hotspur.

Newcastle have tried and failed and two separate occasions to sign the Leicester City midfielder this summer.

The Foxes want around £60 million for their England international – who earns £110,000 per week – and that’s £10 million more than the Magpies’ most recent offer.

However, speculation about him going to St James’s Park is gradually decreasing.

But Paul Merson is confident that Newcastle could wind up signing him yet, despite apparent interest from Tottenham, too.

He told Sportskeeda: “Newcastle apparently bid £50 million for Maddison earlier this summer, with Leicester set to be demanding at least £60 million to part with the England international. What’s £10 million extra for an extra country, eh? I believe the Magpies could come back in with a late bid.”

Is James Maddison joining Newcastle United?

Honestly, Spurs do represent a genuine threat to Eddie Howe’s outfit in the context of signing Maddison.

That’s because the North Londoners have badly needed somebody like him for well over two years, since Christian Eriksen left.

With Dele Alli gone and Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani lo Celso going, Antonio Conte does absolutely need somebody of Maddison’s ilk.

And so long as Newcastle are dithering over making a third – and probably final – approach, there’s still an opportunity for the likes of Conte and Fabio Paratici.
