Ian Wright has claimed that he is now ‘worried’ that Newcastle United are targeting the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Dan Burn, as he told Premier League Productions (27/01/22 at 1:25 pm).

The former striker thinks that the Lyon and Brighton duo are ‘down’ on Newcastle’s transfer wishlist and questioned the force in which they have tried to sign other players.

Newcastle have been searching for a centre-back far and wide, as it seems they will submit a second bid for boyhood fan, Burn.

And if the Magpies land Guimaraes, then they will be beating the likes of Arsenal to the midfielder’s signature.

If those in the St James’ Park boardroom want to get a deal done, then they don’t have much time left as the cut-off point is on Monday evening.

But despite all of that, Wright isn’t convinced by what he is seeing, as he thinks Newcastle aren’t truly showcasing their financial power when pushing for much higher targets on their wishlist.

“We are hearing about all this money, all this money,” said Wright. “They are getting into the last week of the transfer window.

“And we are hearing about the Guimaraes and Dan Burn’s. It seems as though they have gone down on their list.

“If they have got this money, then they are not offering the type of money that will make people say ‘you know what, I have to go for that’.

“So, I am really worried about Newcastle and the money they are willing to spend.”

As soon as the Saudi-led ownership took a front seat at Newcastle, it was always going to result in overhyping in the transfer market.

Perhaps the expectations, from those in the media, is a bit too much just because Newcastle have all the money in the world.

Plus, it needs to be remembered that this is about the short-term and trying to help the club remain in England’s top-flight.

This isn’t about quantity and filling the squad for the sake of it, but adding much-needed quality over numbers, which Eddie Howe and Co. are slowly doing.
