Kaveh Solhekol has been speaking about Newcastle and Diego Carlos live on Sky Sports, where he made a very interesting claim about the transfer.

What’s the story?

Well, this deal seemed completely dead for Newcastle.

Monchi – Director of Football at Sevilla – recently spoke to iNews, where he said that Diego Carlos will definitely be staying in Seville.

However, Solhekol believes there’s still a chance of the Brazilian signing for Newcastle before Monday’s transfer deadline.

The Sky Sports reporter said: “I was told earlier this morning that there is still a small, small chance this could happen.

“I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up because I still think it’s very unlikely, but behind the scenes, people are still working to try and make it happen.”

You have to admire Newcastle’s persistence.

Sevilla have rejected two bids from the Magpies, and after Monchi’s comments, it’s amazing to hear that Newcastle haven’t given up.

In fairness, the Guardian believe Diego Carlos handed in a transfer request, so you can understand why Newcastle feel encouraged to keep going.

Newcastle must land Diego Carlos if they do try again

In our view, Newcastle have to be successful if they make one last attempt to sign the 28-year-old.

Time is of the essence, and in truth, Amanda Staveley should probably be searching for a short-term alternative to Diego Carlos before revisiting the situation in the summer.

There’s also the risk of angering Sevilla by making another late attempt, especially after Monchi said it’s impossible to find a replacement at this stage.

Should that happen, it’s possible the Spanish side up the price for Diego Carlos, and make it even harder for Eddie Howe to sign him.

If Newcastle fail and the window shuts before another centre-back is signed, people will quite rightly ask why Staveley decided not to move on from the towering South American.

Nevertheless, keep your eye on the situation, as anything could happen before Monday’s transfer deadline.
