Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast, Sam Allardyce has been discussing Harry Kane’s ankle injury.

The England captain went down with an injury on Monday as England played Iran, but he battled through the pain before eventually being subbed off for Callum Wilson.

Since then, we’ve had news that Kane has been for a scan on the ankle, and Allardyce says that the only reason he’ll have been for the scan is because his ankle has swollen after the challenge.

Allardyce wasn’t able to diagnose Kane’s problem, but he was fairly certain that Kane‘s ankle will have swollen.

Swelling is the issue

Allardyce shared his view on Kane’s issue.

“There is swelling. I am telling you, you don’t take someone for a scan if there’s no swelling or there is no pain,” Allardyce said.

“I would wrap him up in cotton wool, if there is anything at all, leave him out and let him rest,” Ian Holloway added.

“I don’t think he should’ve stayed on. That would have been him insisting on that, but if you damage your ankle in that tackle, the minute you play on from there it bleeds more and when you get off and put some ice on it’ll end up swelling. That’s why he’s had the scan, but I wouldn’t risk him. He’s the captain, it’s tough to talk to him and tell him.”

Don’t risk it

Allardyce has probably seen this scenario play out hundreds of times, so we wouldn’t be surprised at all if he’s right about Kane’s swelling.

If he is right about this, then one thing is for sure, Kane shouldn’t start against the USA.

The England captain is a key player, but the Three Lions should have enough to get past the US with Callum Wilson up front rather than Kane.

Let Kane recover and get him back fully fit for the knockout stages.
