Alan Shearer has claimed that he is ‘sure’ Aston Villa are going to make more signings during the January transfer window, as he told BBC Sport.

The Premier League’s highest goalscorer shared that this is an ‘exciting’ time for the Villa Park faithful following the arrival of Philippe Coutinho.

Things could get even better for Villa because, added with Coutinho, it seems as though they are closing in on the signature of Lucas Digne.

Perhaps more additions will come after the France international because Villa probably need another centre-back and defensive-minded midfielder.

Axel Tuanzebe returned to Manchester United and was loaned to Napoli, whilst Marvelous Nakamba is seemingly out for the rest of the season.

Nonetheless, Shearer spoke in positive terms about Villa in the transfer market and about Steven Gerrard.

“I am delighted that he is back in our league,” said Shearer. “It was only going to be a matter of time, if he was going to be successful at Rangers, which he was, then it was a case of who was prepared to give him that opportunity?

“And it had to be a club that was going to be backed, which is one of the reasons why he has gone there. Coutinho is that signing that he wanted.

“I am sure there will be more. I think it’s exciting times for Aston Villa. And, yes, I can a difference (Gerrard has made).”

Another centre-back is needed because Kortney Hause is the only backup to Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa.

What will be interesting is what profile of centre-back Villa push for, whether it’s a straight backup or someone to push Konsa and Mings?

Perhaps that player comes in the form of 17-year-old, Kerr Smith, who is close to joining Villa from Dundee United, as reported by 90 min.

Either way, after Coutinho and possibly Digne, it seems as though Villa will go again in the market, as they try and surge towards those European places.
