Jamie Carragher has stated that he is ‘sure’ that Ibrahima Konata will make his Liverpool debut against Norwich in the EFL Cup next week, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (15/09/21 at 7:50 pm).

The 22-year-old, who was Liverpool’s only senior signing of the summer, is yet to make his bow for the Merseyside club.

Even though Jurgen Klopp made changes to the Liverpool side that beat AC Milan 3-2 in the Champions League on Wednesday night, Konate wasn’t handed a chance, instead, it was Joe Gomez who played alongside Joel Matip.

But the games are coming thick and fast for the Reds, so there are still plenty of chances for Konate to take that first step.

And Carragher thinks it will happen in the League Cup next week, as he explained why there has been a delay in him earning those first minutes at Liverpool.

The TV pundit was asked by Micah Richards whether he was ‘surprised’ that Konate isn’t getting a run in the team, after being left out of the XI that faced AC Milan, this is what he said:

“Yes, but Jurgen Klopp, throughout his time, there have been so many instances with new signings where he holds them back.

“It happened with Andy Robertson. It has happened with Fabinho and Oxlade-Chamberlain. He really bides his team and lets them get used to his way of training. Then we will see him play.

“There is a game next week in the Carabao Cup, I am sure he will play that.”

Liverpool face-off against Crystal Palace this weekend, who are managed by Premier League legend Patrick Vieira and they picked up their first win of the season last time out.

Three days later, Klopp’s men travel to Carrow Road once more – after their opening day 3-0 win – and it is perhaps the perfect time for Konate to start.

If he does make his debut then it will be interesting to see who he partners with.

Perhaps it will be Gomez because both players need the minutes, and it seems as though Klopp is going forward with Matip and Virgil van Dijk being his senior two in the Premier League.
