It was reported in midweek that Liverpool were interested in sigining Brazilian prospect Antony.

The South American is enjoying a brilliant season at Ajax, netting 11 goals across all competitions so far.

And according to 90 Min, Liverpool are growing fascinated by the 21-year-old attacker.

However, a UK-based journalist has revealed that the Anfield outfit might have one eye on replacing Mohamed Salah with Antony.

Salah’s contract on Merseyside expires in 2023 and with an impasse over negotiations, it does look increasingly likely that the 29-year-old will not be committing his long-term future to Jurgen Klopp’s project.

Graeme Bailey has told Anfield Watch that Liverpool are ‘huge admirers’ of Antony and that his arrival – and that of Luis Diaz, who joined for £49 million in January – could be linked to potential departures for Salah and Sadio Mane at some point.

He said: “I am told that Liverpool are huge admirers of Ajax superstar Antony. Liverpool’s scouts clearly recognised Antony was a player that would fit into their system, and from that point of view they have maintained their interest.

“Some fans will be wondering in the wake of Diaz, just why Liverpool would still be looking so closely at Antony – and yes, I am sorry to say it is connected to Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

“I am going to go into detail on Liverpool’s star pair in a future column, but suffice to say the planning for the future is something that the club are looking at, and as much as some on the Kop and beyond may not want to hear this, there will be life after Mane and Salah, and it will likely be sooner than they think or want.”

Salah replacement?

Well Antony, like Salah, is a right-sided attacker.

And with Diaz signed last month in Mane’s position, it does seem very probable that if Liverpool do indeed want the Brazilian, it’ll be with a view toward him succeeding the Egypt international.

Obviously Antony isn’t on Salah’s level just yet, having netted only 11 goals across all competitions for the Dutch outfit this season.

However, he is also eight years younger than Salah and under a man-manager of Klopp’s talents, well the German coach could do wonders with the youngster.
